Newsletter Archive

Editions of the newsletter between 1966 and 2012, namely issues 1 to 325, were scanned from hardcopy in 2015 by the late Jenny Longbottom, with searchable text generated by optical character recognition (OCR).

In view of the progress made in AI-assisted OCR in the intervening years, by September 2026 the time seemed ripe to reprocess the newsletters. The PDF files were also renamed consistently and other minor corrections made as part of this review. OCR reprocessing was based on the free and open source software packages OCRmyPDF and Tesseract. (Inevitably, there will be a short delay until Google reindexes the revised files for searching.)

Originally published bimonthly, beginning in 1975 the newsletter nominally became a monthly publication, excluding January (mostly). However, as can be seen below, this schedule was somewhat aspirational!

In March 1988, Bob Nicholls relinquished the editorship to Val Hamey, assisted by wife Kath, under a revised masthead for a stint that was to last 17 years (see issue 168).

Beginning in 1992, the original Balmain Association News Sheet assumed the name The Peninsula Observer. Whereas previously it was hand-delivered, henceforth it was to be posted. Consequently, in order to minimise postage costs, it was registered with Australia Post as a publication. However, this required it to have a name other than News Sheet, Newsletter, or Bulletin (see issue 200).

Although produced electronically well before 1992 – Ventura Desktop Publisher was first used for issue 176 (see issue 177) – the newsletters survive only in printed form until 2013.

Starting in 1993, the newsletter was again published bimonthly, thereby reducing postage costs, and in mid-2005 it became a quarterly. This coincided with Fergus Fricke assuming the editorship, initially assisted by Ruth McLeod (see issue 295). He was relieved by Christina Ritchie in 2009 (see issue 309), giving way to Anneliese Parkes in 2010 (issue 314).

The Peninsula Observer was first produced in colour in 2013. These issues in the archive are native PDF documents ("born digital"), and are more reliable for searching than their predecessors, which depend on imperfect OCR. The omission of the June 2020 issue bears witness to the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic.

Publication of The Peninsula Observer was suspended in June 2025 and subsequently resumed solely as email newsletters. The latter will be added to this archive in due course.
